The magic wand remote control is the latest invention to employ gesture recognition technology. Developed by Kymera the wand is a buttonless universal remote control that allows you to control almost any infra-red device through a series of different gestures. You can change channel, turn the volume up or down, Gingher shears or switch on your lights through specific movements of the wand.
Gesture recognition has been developed through a combination of computer science and language technology. The overall goal of this is to interpret human gestures by the use of mathematics algorithms.
Gesture recognition software has already been used in other devices such as a computer mouse. More recently this technology has been expanded for use in devices such as the Nintendo Wii. The Wii studies changes in acceleration over time and replicates this with a desired gesture during a computer game.
It is this same kind of acceleration focused software that is used in the magic wand remote control. It uses the speed with which a gesture is performed to determine whether an action was deliberate. For example, you will not accidentally change channel or turn on your ceiling fan by merely picking the wand up. It has to be a powerful gesture for it to interpret this as a deliberate gesture.
It also doesn't matter which way round you hold the wand as it can automatically detect the correct way up.
The future of gesture recognition software will involve the development of things such as sign language and facial expression recognition. So eventually you may be able to turn your TV on or off by merely smiling or frowning.
